Chester’s Comedy Festival showcases best of British Comedy

Stars from T.V. and the International Comedy Circuit are set to take to the stage from Sunday, June 30 as part of this year’s CH1 Chester Comedy Festival

This Sunday will see the return of the CH1 Chester Comedy Festival, with household names including Gary Delaney, Star of Mock The Week and Live at The Apollo, The Chase’s Sinnerman – Paul Sinha and star of the popular 80’s sitcom ‘The Young Ones’, Alexei Sayle leading the line up to provide a week of comedy gold for Cestrians and visitors to the city.

Organised by CH1ChesterBID, the CH1 Chester Comedy Festival will take place over eight-days and will see 26 acclaimed comedians take to the stage in sixteen of Chester’s most prestigious venues.

With performances taking place between Sunday, June 30, and Sunday, July 7, the festival offers something for everyone with comedy specials and touring shows; preview shows; Comedy Crawls; ‘Squeaky Clean’ performances with afternoon tea included; Comedy Bingo raising money for children’s charity Stick ‘n’ Step, and a free film screening event for children at The Grosvenor Museum.

Performers including Daliso Chaponda from Britain’s Got Talent’s and the queen of comedy Jo Caulfield whose numerous TV credits include Have I Got News For You, will preview their Edinburgh Fringe material to a captive audience in Chester.

Judy Tagell, Marketing Manager at CH1ChesterBID, said: “This Sunday will start an exciting, jam-packed eight days of comedy festival gigs and performances. We’re looking forward to welcoming stars of comedy from across the UK and having them descend on Chester for evenings of laughter and entertainment.

“The festival was incredibly well received last year, so we’re thrilled to be bringing it back again in 2019. We expect it will be just as popular this year, especially with the good weather forecast. Many events are close to selling out in advance and there’s certainly a rising sense of excited anticipation from both the comedians, the venues and the audiences.”

Multi award-winning character comedian Tom Binns aka Ivan Brackenbury, creator and star of BBC One’s Hospital People and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown favourite will also be performing. The showcase at Macdonald New Blossoms Hotel on July 4, as part of the comedy festival in Chester is part of his ongoing international tour.

Tom has been touring the UK and Europe throughout the year and has been proclaimed as a ‘comedy genius’ by reviewers for The Times, Telegraph and Time Out. His ‘Psychic Comedium’ act particularly has audiences baffled and amused in equal measure, as he appears to be genuinely talking to audiences’ dead ancestors.

Speaking of his ongoing tour, Tom said: “I travel all over the world to perform, and it is always nice to see the different receptions I get from different crowds, I am sure the reception at Chester will be great and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Adding to the roster, Irish TV Star and comedian, Neil Delamere from BBC’s The Blame Game, Fighting Talk and The News Quiz makes his debut appearance at the festival alongside star of Britain’s Got Talent, Jonny Awsum and circuit favourites Jamie Sutherland, Allyson June Smith and Troy Hawke.

And saving the best ‘til last, The God Father of British alternative comedy, Alexei Sayle will close this year’s festival at the stunning Chester Town Hall assembly room on Sunday 7th July.
