The House of Bernarda Alba

The House of Bernarda Alba

The House of Bernarda Alba By Federico Garcia Lorca

Purple Coat Productions are a visiting company.

Age Recommendation:14+, contains mild bad language sexual suggestion.

Following her husband’s funeral, powerful matriarch Bernarda Alba decrees to her five daughters that the household will enter a period of eight years mourning. The only one it seems will escape this fate is the eldest daughter, Angustias, who is already betrothed to the village’s most eligible bachelor.

In a merciless rural village where reputation is key, Bernarda does all she can to make sure her house and family are respected amongst the community and will stop at nothing to achieve it.

In the strict confines of the house, jealousy and suppressed sexuality rise to the surface. As Bernarda’s oppression of her daughters increases it is more than the girls’ liberty that is in danger.

Supported by Stephen Fry, Judi Dench and the RSC, PurpleCoat present the first production in their scheme to support and train the next generation of Young Directors. ‘☆☆☆☆☆’ Liverpool Echo, British Theatre Guide, Reviews Hub, Liverpool Sound and Vision, Observer Ireland ‘PurpleCoat delivers on the promise of something different.
