Summer Saturday provides a Dascombe Double at Chester Racecourse

Know No Limits, backed down to 5/1, lived up to her name when landing the Lamb & Watt Novice Median Auction Stakes by four lengths to open Summer Saturday at Chester Racecourse. Apollinaire had gone for home but did not have the pace of the winner who raced clear of the rail. Jockey Richard Kingscote said: “A turning track does help. I thought she might not be strong enough for six furlongs, but she saw it out well. Successful trainer Tom Dascombe added: “That was great! She’s got experience and that was key today. She’s nice filly and it’s taken time for the penny to drop, we’re thrilled!”

Tom Dascombe was celebrating a double after his two runners occupied first and second place in the Marylebone Gin Handicap. She Can Boogie was the pace-setter but the 10/11 favourite Angel Alexander justified his starting price and beat his stable companion home by half a length. “It’s great, it’s our local track and we want to have winners here. My two runners have given each other a hard race. Jayne is riding brilliantly, and her claim probably made the difference today. Cheshire Equine Clinic and our vet Matthew O’Donnell have done a great job on the horse, he’s had a few problems and now he is able to run twice in a week – and win!” Jockey Jayne Elliott added: “I was confident turning in. He obviously handled the conditions and he’s an improving horse.”
“He stretched lovely today. We were at the back and it was a case of waiting for the gaps. He was tough and stuck his neck out. We got lucky in the end,” explained jockey Nicola Currie in the winners’ enclosure following the Whitley Neill Handcraft Gin Handicap. Currie was aboard 4/1 chance Durston who made up ground to overhaul the leaders and win by one-length from the Lariat, the 5/2 favourite.

The tactics adopted with Eponina paid off in the JJ Whitley Fillies’ Handicap as jockey Theodore Ladd recorded his first success at Chester Racecourse. “The plan was to keep her ways from other horses, and she raced with her ears pricked. The minute she sees another horse she idles,” said Ladd. The winner, returned at 9/2, set the pace and had enough in hand to keep her head in front to record a one-and-three-quarter length victory, despite drifting right across the track in the closing stages.

Trainer Adam West paid tribute to his winner, Regular Income after landing the City of London Gin Handicap with the four-year-old, who was sent off at 9/2. “He’s paid me back with four wins, he was my first two-year-old winner, bought at the breeze-up sales; he’s been a great horse. He’s a nightmare to watch and even worse to ride,” said West. Jockey Jimmy Quinn brought the winner wide entering the straight and the horse pricked his ears as he galloped past the leaders to win by one length from Bit Of A Quirke.

“I steered him round and got a nice position, he’d be better on better ground,” was the summary provided by jockey Kieran O’Neill as he dismounted from Quick Look, the 5/2 favourite and three-
length winner of the Liverpool Gin Handicap. Lambrini Lullaby headed the field in the early stages of the race before the winner burst through and the result was never in doubt.

Racing drew to a close with the Crabbie Whisky Handicap and the gallop was dictated by Al Kout who faded in the closing stages. A late sweeping late run from Super Kid, a 7/1 chance resulted in a three-quarters of a length success. Jason Hart did the steering and said: “I had him switched off and the more you kid a horse, the more he does.”

The popular Ladies Evening on Friday, 28 June 2019 is the next fixture at Chester Racecourse this season. Attendance at Summer Saturday was 18,035, attendance was affected by the open course closure due to heavy rain in the days preceding the meeting.
